In 2021, Town Hall Seattle hosted poet Rita Dove and I was asked to to write a song based on her collection of poems “Playlist for the Apocalypse.” There was a short poem about hair that sparked this song. It celebrates getting your hair “did.” It celebrates how our hair can be our crown.

Lyrics

My hair is my movement
My instantaneous groovement
My self-realization and my mighty creation It's my sight and my seeing
My walking struttin being
It's me stepping out Magnifique
Short and sassy shake and go Heat resistant cornrow
microkink Kanakalon
Brazillian blend extra long
Swiss lace front, a loose cascade trendy classic, 'scuse my shades Nubian locs and ghana braids
My hair is where I'm going
Its the lift when I be lowin
It's the gasp when I walk into the room
All the secrets, all the prayin, all unsaid things I'm sayin Its the mighty mic drop that goes boom
Chorus
Bridge
My beauty is deep inside
So deep it will take you on a ride
Who'll you'll meet I cannot say, but I warn I can show you who I am today
Chorus /Fade
